# Maintaining a wrought-iron obelisk, without thinking about it weekly

A visual check once or twice a year is enough to catch rust before it spreads. The mistakes that speed it up, and how to avoid them.

## The simple habit: a visual check, once or twice a year

A pass in spring, before the plant leafs out again and hides the structure, is enough to catch an early rust spot. Caught early — light sanding, then a touch-up of paint — it’s easy to fix. Left for several seasons, it progresses under the protective layer and becomes harder to treat.

## Two mistakes that speed up rust without anyone noticing

> Corrosion mechanisms sourced from metalwork-industry technical sheets — general metallurgy knowledge, not specific to one obelisk model.

**Mixing different metals without isolation.** A galvanic pair forms when two different metals stay in prolonged contact — near the coast, salt-laden air acts as an electrolyte and speeds up corrosion of the less noble of the two metals. A screw or fixing that doesn’t match the rest of the structure can become a weak point this way.

**Painting a freshly galvanised piece too soon.** Freshly galvanised zinc typically develops a thin layer of “white rust” (zinc oxide/hydroxide) within the year following treatment. This layer, along with any leftover protective oils, must be removed before painting — otherwise paint adhesion is compromised and it peels prematurely.

## Near the coast, extra vigilance

Sea air speeds up corrosion, especially where different metals are in contact. In that context, professionals often recommend stainless steel or aluminium over painted or galvanised steel alone — worth mentioning for an obelisk project if your garden is exposed to sea spray.

## Frequently asked questions

How often should a wrought-iron obelisk be checked?
Once or twice a year is enough for typical use — a pass in spring, before foliage returns, lets you catch a rust spot before it spreads.
Why does my new galvanised piece have white marks?
That’s “white rust,” a normal occurrence on fresh zinc within the year after galvanising — remove it before painting, it isn’t a manufacturing defect.
Does living near the sea change the recommended care?
Yes — sea air speeds up corrosion, especially where different metals are in contact. Worth mentioning at the quote stage to adjust your obelisk’s finish.
