# Installing and caring for your obelisk

A well-anchored obelisk withstands wind and the weight of a mature plant without shifting; a well-cared-for obelisk goes through the seasons without rusting. The two are linked — a poorly chosen fixing also weakens the rust protection at the base of the uprights.

## Three ways to fix an obelisk depending on the ground

Buried sleeves — lawn, soil bed: tubes set into the ground hold the obelisk’s feet, which lock in place without being permanently fixed. Removable without damaging the bed. Bolted base plates — concrete slab, patio: fixed with mechanical or chemical anchors, quick and reversible, no concrete footing needed. Direct concrete footing — open soil, windy spot: feet set in poured concrete, for maximum stability — recommended for large formats or very exposed locations.

## Caring for wrought iron without thinking about it every week

A visual check once or twice a year — in spring, before the plant leafs out again — is enough to catch early rust before it spreads. A localised spot treated early just needs light sanding and a touch-up of paint.

> The finish largely determines how little maintenance a piece needs. Galvanising (a zinc bath) protects by sacrificing the zinc instead of the steel; powder coating (oven-cured paint) mostly protects at the surface. Combined — a duplex system — service life can reach up to 2.5 times that of either treatment alone, according to surface-treatment industry technical sheets.

Two mistakes speed up rust without anyone noticing: mixing different metals without isolation (a galvanic pair forms, especially near the coast where salt air acts as an electrolyte), and painting a freshly galvanised piece too soon — fresh zinc develops a thin layer of “white rust” within a year that must be removed before painting, or the paint won’t adhere properly.

## What the galvanising standard actually requires

Hot-dip galvanising of a steel piece is governed by standard EN ISO 1461, which sets a minimum zinc thickness depending on the steel’s own thickness — an obelisk, with uprights generally over 6mm, falls into the most demanding category:

| Steel thickness | Local minimum | Average minimum |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Over 6mm | 70 microns | 85 microns |
| 3 to 6mm | 55 microns | 70 microns |
| 1.5 to 3mm | 45 microns | 55 microns |

According to industry technical sheets, that zinc layer generally lasts 25 to 30 years in an urban setting and can exceed 50 years in a rural one, against 15 to 20 years in an industrial setting and 20 to 30 years by the coast — these durations remain indicative, not a contractual guarantee.

## What iron section suits an obelisk

In traditional ironwork, load-bearing uprights are most often shaped from square bar 10 to 16mm across, scrollwork and decorative motifs from flat bar 16 × 6mm to 20 × 8mm — reference points from traditional ironwork training (the CAP Ferronnier curriculum), not a specification unique to this workshop. The taller the obelisk, or the heavier the plant it needs to carry, the closer the required section sits to the upper end of that range — confirmed in your quote based on your project.

## Frequently asked questions

Which fixing should I choose for a soil bed?
Buried sleeves suit most climbing-plant obelisks; a direct concrete footing is better for a large-format piece in a very windy spot.
Can an obelisk be moved once installed?
With buried sleeves or bolted base plates, fairly easily. A direct concrete footing makes moving it harder — worth flagging at the quote stage if that matters to you.
Does living near the sea change the recommended care?
Yes: sea air speeds up corrosion, especially where different metals are in contact. Worth mentioning at the quote stage to adjust the finish.
Does a galvanised obelisk need regular repainting?
Not necessarily: on its own, a properly specified hot-dip galvanising (standard EN ISO 1461) already lasts several decades. Powder coating added on top (a duplex system) mainly serves the look and extends the time before a first repaint even further.
